I chose “The Martyrdom of St. Matthew” as the painting that greatest illustrates the baroque period. The nice factors surrounding my decision are obvious in Caravaggio’s painting. Here Caravaggio uses the whole canvas to illustrate complexity, flow, and chiaroscuro. The painting depicts the foundation of light to be from the left aspect of the plane. The brightest light focuses on Matthew’s executioner who intends to hit Matthew with a vintage balcanic hand weapon. Caravaggio illustrates the use of lighting by casting believable shadows masterfully. As an example, the shadow of the deal with on balcanic hands weapon displays on the executioner’s remaining knee and thigh. Another shadow appears on the executioner’s right inner thigh.
