Immigrants arriving in America for their first time are devastated at their new lifestyles and realize their "golden lives" were simply fantasies and dreams of an perfect life in America. Immigrants from overseas countries, including those mentioned in Uchida's Picture Bride, confronted countless issues and hardships, including a feeling of disillusionment and disappointment. What's more, immigrants and film brides confronted racial discrimination not just from white guys, but the United States government, as well. Immigrants were plagued with economic hardships lived in deplorable living conditions. Though almost every immigrant and film bride who came to America fantasized about an ideal life, they were faced with countless hardships and challenges before becoming accepted American citizens. As soon as an immigrant from a foreign property comes to America, immigrants aspire to fulfill their gold dreams in the land of the free; however, as they quickly learn soon after they arrive in America, their lives are full of hardships and disillusions. A picture bride, who arrives in America with a fantasy of living with a rich, successful, and handsome young man, is frequently disappointed to detect the realities like the overall look and lifestyle of her future husband. When Hana first matches Taro, she discovers that "[Taro] no longer resemble[s] the early photo [his] parents sent [Hana]he was already turning bald" (Uchida, 12). This shock of fact is not uncommon to picture brides, in reality, "many guys in the united states send pictures to envision brides of themselves from if they had been ten to twenty five years youngernext to a beautiful automobile--possessed by their boss" (Bunting, 1). Picture brides and immigrants arrive in America full of hopes for a better life for themselves and their kids and a wonderful new life in America. The shock and dissatisfaction immigrants and film brides encounter when they arrive at America greatly contribute to their shift in attitude from a positive attitude into a cowardly, hesitant behavior.
