In the 1850s the most contentious topics was slavery. Slavery opened up many debates, discussions and arguments. This decade is known as the tumultuous decade because of all of the events which led America downhill. It divided the country into two, both the North and South or the Union and Confederacy. Unconstitutional, immoral, inhuman and plain out wrong was how the Union described captivity. On the other side the south viewed slavery as the ideal thing to do since blacks were lesser human begins which made slavery justified. Also from the 1850s new territories in the nation were being added so the question of allowing captivity or never arose there. During this decade several compromises were proposed to avoid war but all were unsuccessful and made both North or South more prepared to struggle. Slavery was the primary reason for the beginning of the Civil War with events which occurred because of slavery. For America slavery was a political, economic and labor system which made it the most contentious issue to be discussed and settled.
