The supreme motive of both egoist and altruist is certainly personal gain. Separating both ideologies is the way that is accomplished. For the altruist, addressing the requirements of humanity may be the sole reason for existence purportedly. Egoists, however, won't act if an actions will not benefit themselves directly. In The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand addresses the function of egoists and altruists within society through character development. There are four characters specifically who distinctly exhibit the attributes of altruistic and egoistic individuals: Catherine Halsey, Peter Keating, and Ellsworth Toohey have altruistic qualities; whereas, Howard Roark is normally explicitly egoistic. By definition, altruism is "the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others".
