The House of the Spirits and Uncle Vanya are two famous international literary works composed within a century of one another. Regardless of the differences in time periods of which the two functions were composed, they both appear to communicate the literary motif of class struggle between the poor lower class and the rich upper class elites. Both intricate on the feelings of resentment and regret as a result of the hardships of life around them as demonstrated through hidden historic relations, literary devices like parables and themes, and appreciate reminiscences. Since the beginning of culture, class struggle has existed not just as a result of economic conditions but social conditions as well (Thirteen Notes on Class Struggle for Discussion). Many civilizations such as the early Romans have experienced a division of classes based on economic standing that influenced how high or low one's standing was in culture. In the exact same manner, The House of the Spirits showcases the branch between the poor lower class peasants, residents of Tres Marias, and the upper class elites, Esteban Trueba, called the aristocracy. The division between the courses could be compared to the institution of American Slavery in which the upper class owned all of the property, had all the riches, and commanded everything regarding social and economic existence while the slaves were uneducated, hungry, and did all of the work on the land (Slavery in America).
