Daniel was a poet and also the writer of the Old Testament book of Daniel. The time period in which this book happened was between 560 to 530 B.C. (Smith). Daniel was a slave to King Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar told Daniel to just worship the god of Nebuchadnezzar's choosing and that Daniel could only eat specific foods. Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, refused to listen to this king. This choice led to all four of these being thrown to the burning fires of a furnace. They lived because of the faith in God and God saved them from death in the fires. Daniel also showed his faith in God when he confronted the lions at the lion's den. Daniel was told to not worship his God but he did anyways so that he was thrown into the lion's den. Daniel understood God was loyal and he'd faith God are there for him. Daniel additionally received visions from God concerning the coming Messiah and the end times. That can be when Daniel's prophecies started. The significant theme of Daniel is that God is sovereign and He's always triumphant ("Book of Daniel"). God indicates that He is triumphant when he conserves Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego in the burning furnace and if He saves Daniel in the lions. Daniel had faith in God and God was faithful to Daniel. Daniel's name means "God is the judge" (Blank). Daniel was born in Jerusalem during the reign of king Josiah. "Daniel appears to have been of royal blood and also by the kingdom of Judah" (Freeman 272). Daniel was taken captive by the Babylonians when he was just a teenager. The account of Daniel's life actually begins when he must stand up for his beliefs. He refused to eat the food the king told him to eat because he knew it was.
