"Women belong in the kitchen" "All women should be barefoot and pregnant." "Women are strictly homemakers." These are some of the commonly used phrases about the female role in society that date back to the mid-seventeenth century. But, ardent supporters of gender equality have surfaced in almost every civilization in which this ideology is practiced. Nathaniel Hawthorne investigates this inveterate societal conflict through his story The Scarlet Letter. The principal character, Hester Prynne, is punished for committing adultery by being made to wear a scarlet letter upon her bosom; Hawthorne produced a story sympathetic to the female cause and attested, through Hester, qualities of ancient feminism that afterwards establish themselves during his life. In this novel, the character of Hester Prynne represents an early feminist hero in that she challenges society's perspective of women throughout the mid-1800's but she takes on the male role in numerous aspects throughout the story. Even though the tangibility of gender equality has progressed throughout time, the definition of feminism and the reasons behind it have remained the same. Throughout history, women are deemed inferior to men and refused simple rights like education and also a political voice. In some cultures, girls are presumed evil and the source of misery. In Greek mythology, for example, it had been Pandora, a female, who opened the forbidden box also released plagues and devastation among humankind. Likewise, during the Puritan era, once the publication is based, girls were belittled and severely oppressed. Generations of Biblical teachings engrained in them that their only responsibilities were to give birth to kids, quietly attend worship services, and submit to their husband's.
