Domestic violence is an act of crime that occurs in domestic household units. It is also known as as spousal abuse or family violence. Domestic violence is not only related to physical abuse but also psychological, sexual, financial, mental and verbal threats. In accordance with ( Human Right Watch, 1995) cited from Macionis, John J., 2008. Domestic violence is defined as physical harm, usually accompanied by verbal threats and harassment, psychological abuse or the destruction of property as a way of coercion, control, revenge, or punishment on a person with whom the abuser is in romantic connection. Besides that, according to a post by Women's Aid, the government defines violence as any event of threatening behavior, violence or abuse (emotional, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, irrespective of gender or sexuality. Domestic violence may happen and might happen to any individual despite their sex, social class or status, life style, age, family history, race, ethnicity or place of dwelling. Any individual may be victim of domestic violence. Based on a post titled Physical Violence against Women the World Health Organization reported that 40 to 70 percent of women were killed in the United States, Canada, Australia and Israel by their husbands or male partners. Domestic violence can be categorized into different categories. Primarily, is bodily violence. Physical violence is physical abuse where the abuser will hit, kick, burnoff, punch, smack, slap and carry out any action using objects or body that will hurt and gut the victim's physical wellness. An instance of physical abuse is severe burns on your system due to cigarette burns. Second is emotional abuse. Emotional abuse is just opposite of physical abuse because the abuser will use harsh, vulgar and unwanted words to emotionally abuse the victim. The consequence of verbal abuse such as crying, isolation, name-calling and shaming also falls in exactly the same category of emotional abuse. For example, shouting out vulgar words is a kind of emotional abuse. Emotional abuse can result in severe depression and lack of assurance.
