A sonnet is a lyric poem of fourteen lines, after one of many set of rhyme-schemes. Critics of these sonnet have recognized varying categories, but both attribute sonnet types are the Italian type (Petrarchan) and the English kind (Shakespearean). Shakespeare is still nowadays seen as in idol in English literature. Nobody can read among his functions and also be left indifferent. His manner of writing is truly fascinating. His sonnets, which are his most popular work, reflect several strong themes. Several arguments attempt to find the full content of those themes. Shakespeare's themes are for the most part conventional topics, such as love and beauty. Nevertheless, Shakespeare presents these topics in his own unique fashion, most especially by fixing the poems of beauty not to some fair maiden, but rather to a young man: "Can I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate" (book). Shakespeare points out that the youth's beauty is more perfect then the beauty of a summer day. It is also "more temperate", in other words more gentle, more controlled whereas the summer's day may have violent excesses in shop. At first glance of sonnet 18, it is pretty much certain that you would believe Shakespeare is speaking to a woman, not a man. The notion of a man describing another individual with such choice of words is always viewed with a different eye. Several even said that Shakespeare is homosexual. Whichever the case may be, Shakespeare painted beauty in the very original issue. He dared to do what everybody else did not, or maybe dreaded to, and realized his purpose with flying colours.
