Celebrating Celebration One of the many Christian traditions that has become relatively quiet is the party of the Epiphany, or Twelfth Night, as it is sometimes called. This was a night of great celebration, because it was a remembrance of the Magi's arrival at the birthplace of Christ, and it began the winter season. In the time of Shakespeare, a play was written with this night in mind, and has been suitably titled, '' Twelfth Night. The drama doesn't have anything directly to do with the celebration for which it's named, and the only obvious connection is that it's thought that the very first performance of this play was done on Twelfth Night, 1602. However, there is a highly symbolic connection between the name and what ends up happening during the drama. The name is representative of those attitudes and actions that prevailed on Twelfth night, and really throughout the whole carnival season, up until lent. These approaches were light and carefree, and oftentimes, life seemed to be turned on its head. It turned out to be a topsy-turvy world on Twelfth Night, and such is the nature of Shakespeare's excellent work, Twelfth Night. In Shakespeare's time bash was quite a popular subject, since the tensions between the Catholic Church and these separatists known as the puritans were coming to a head. Though the Catholics still embraced party and the idea that ceremony proved to be a good thing in faith, the puritans were on a quest to rid faith, and really everyday life, of virtually all ceremony, and lots of times of any kind of elaborate celebration.
