As young adults in school we know many tools that we'll utilize and return out into the world. One of these tools, the most important is freedom. Independence means losing the wheels that mentors have given students, and using the information they've supplied them to create a life. Mentors guide faculty students into getting the adults that they will be just one day. Although students may not be independent while they are getting help from teachers, teachers give the students the capacity and confidence to become independently. Mike Rose who had the help of mentors explains, You'll need people to direct you into conversations that look foreign and threatening. You're going to want models, tons of them to explain to you the way to get at what you do not understand. You'll need people to help you center yourself in your own developing ideas. You'll need people to be on the lookout for you. (100) Basically, Rose is stating that students need an example of someone who is currently independent. A mentor who will hold their hands today, but will eventually let it move, or so the student can go out to the world using their new found liberty. College students should realize that it's okay to ask for help. Rose sates, "We are living in America with so many platitudes regarding motivation and self-reliance and individualism-and myths gleaned from them, like people of Horatio Alger-that we find it tough to accept the fact that they're serious nonsense." (99) Essentially, Rose is explaining how students should not be expected to learn how to be independent by themselves.
