Rebel Without a Clue at Updike's A & P Babies always worry that it is very important to make a good initial impression. That is what Sammy was hoping to achieve at John Updike's "A & P." Though some people believe that Sammy is a hero for standing up to his faith when he stopped, there is conclusive evidence that he stopped in an attempt to impress a girl he was clearly attracted to, Queenie. We understand he is attracted to Queenie since he goes to great lengths to tell us exactly what she looks like, what her mannerisms are, and also the way that the other girls follow her. By way of instance, he says, "She was the Queen. She kind of them, another two glancing around and creating their shoulders around" (1026). This easy quote indicates that Sammy instantly identified Queenie since the one in charge. Another quote which explains this absolutely is, "but you got the idea that she had spoken the other two into coming in here with her, and now she had been showing them the way to perform it, walk slow and hold yourself straight" ( 1026). Naturally Sammy is drawn to Queenie and would like to be seen by her. Sammy thinks to himself "She should have felt in the corner of the eye me and over my shoulder Stokesie at the second slot watching, but she didn't trip. Not that queen" (1027).) Sammy is astonished to see something in this way in his town. He states, "and the women generally put on a top or shorts or something else before they get out of their vehicle and into the street. And anyhow these are usually women with six children and varicose veins communicating their legs and no one, including these could care less" (1027).
