Young Man Blues From the words of Valentine Wiggin, Ender Wiggin's sister, "We might be young, but we're not helpless. We play by their rules long enough and it becomes our match." [Card 237] From the start, Ender Wiggin has been destined to defeat the human race enemy, the Buggers. This is because he had been different and better than everyone else, including his own brother, Peter, and his sister, Valentine, who were candidates for his position ; being the commander of the army, the International Fleet. His recruitment officers hadn't seen anything like him. They watched the winning characteristics of Ender, including being a very sophisticated, innovative student, assimilating the actions of his enemies, also for the utter, brilliant personality that led him to victory, again and again. The young guy who conquered the notorious Buggers started as a small boy in a normal school, like the rest of his peers. Although he shared a number of the other children's problems, one problem he never had was that the ability to learn and grasp a topic. In fact, he was a very quick learner, requiring little training to become advanced at any subject. For example, while in civilian school, he slacked off while being educated arithmetic since he'd already been taught how to perform multiplication by his sister when he was just 3 years old. [Card 5 ] Another example is shown when Ender and another new cadets, 'Launchies', are put into the null gravity conflict room. With their suits, they have guns that shoot a ray of light, and if you aim this beam of light at another, it might lead them to become stiff, or 'suspended', so that they could not escape or return fire. Ender and another boy figured out the way this functioned over the initial ten minutes.
