Objectification of Women in The House of Mirth Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth is a affront to the fictitious societal values of trendy New York society. The heroine is Lily Bart, a woman who is ruined by the very society which produces her. Lily is well-born however bad. The story outlines the decrease of Lily as she moves through a string of dwelling residences, from houses to resort lodgings. Lily resides in a New York society in which appearances are all.
