Middle childhood, is a really exciting time for young children from the ages of seven to twelve years old. It is called the school years and new social and cognitive characteristics are being learned in the home and at college. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory found this to be the latentcy stage where no much happens. He explained this because kids at this age sexual and aggressive urges are repressed ("Stages of Growth Development," 1898-1987). This paper will also talk about the modifications from middle childhood to adolescence, the affects of peers and parents and the affects they have on developing kids. Functional families help children in middle childhood become more successful in society and more self reliable. Kids can't receive the basic requirements without functional parents. Such needs are food, shelter, and clothes. At this age children are dependent because they can bathe, dress and many likely wash their own rooms. Parents at a family will show kids love and comprehension, thus allowing the child to develop into self-critical since they grow cognitively. Last but not least kids of all functional families encourage kids in academic events and to nurture peer friendships, a very important part while transitioning into adolescence (Merchant, 2001). On the other hand kids from dysfunctional families, tend to miss treat children and not actually nurture as frequently. This may include single parent homes, drug addicted parents. The following factors have a profound effect on societal development for mid childhood children; excessive struggles within the house, overly authoritarian parents and coldness from the family (Merchant, 2001).
