Ben Franklin Benjamin Franklin was among the most influential men and women in American history. Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, at a small city in Boston. Benjamin was one of ten kids. His father, Josiah had been a soap and candle maker, along with his mum Abiah Folger was a homemaker. When Benjamin was just twelve years old that he signed his identures so that he would apprentice under his brother, working at a printing media. Here he worked for his brother James for more than decades. Benjamin had tremendous talent, and following his apprenticeship was up, he obtained a job printing to the Boston Gazette. Nevertheless this didn't last very long, after just ten months Franklin's contract was granted to somebody else. This prompted Ben to begin his own paper called the New England Courant. This was the start of a lengthy life of achievement for Ben Franklin. Franklin had outstanding writing talent. His new business had done very nicely, but Franklin needed more. Ben wished to take over Philadelphia's main papers, The Pennsylvania Gazette. From the year 1729 Franklin bought this newspaper. He also renamed it (Thank Heavens) The Pennsylvania Gazette. A woman named Deborah Read moved to his house, and became his common law wife. During that time Franklin had recognized himself as a pioneer in the Philadelphia community. He helped to set Philadelphia's first public library. Franklin is also accredited with publishing the first almanac at 1732. Its name has been Poor Richard's Almanack.
