The Representation of Gender in the Movies Bend it Like Beckham and Billy Elliot The society we live in today is filled with stereotypes. Every task, sport, item of clothes carries and a lot more conveys a particular stereotype. If people go against and challenge these stereotypes they're seen as strange and unconventional and may wind up stuck with those stereotypes for life. In both films Billy Elliot and Bend it like Beckham we see stereotyping but in a different manner in each one. Back in Billy Elliot we see a lot of stereotypes with the primary ones being that boys should not do ballet and if they do then they must be gay. Back in Bend it like Beckham we also observe a great deal of stereotyping, together with all the mains ones being that women should not play soccer and that all woman footballers are lesbians. In both films we see characters going about their lives attempting to achieve what they wish to do in life, but funding obstacles in their way because of society's prejudices. We see a variety of people with various perspectives and the way the main characters Billy and Jess, conquer these stereotypes and obstacles to do exactly what they want and to change people's views on them. The focus of this essay will be to identify the stereotypes, to describe why people stereotype this manner and how Billy and Jess alter people's perspectives and overcome those stereotypes. In Billy Elliot we view stereotypes about three main individuals in the movie. The primary and most obvious one is Billy; then there's his dad and then his buddy Michael. Billy's dad is stereotyped as a tough Geordie miner, who does not care what his son wants to do; he does what is best for his image society of being 'tough'...
