Educating Children with Autism There has been a rise in the amount of children diagnosed with autism or other autism spectrum disorders. It is probable as a teacher that you will have a minumum of one child with this identification in your own classroom. This paper explores some of the methods used to teach autistic kids. Autism is a disorder characterized by important problems in communication and social function. Autism is actually known as Autism Spectrum Disorder and encompasses a wide range disabilities such as Asperger syndrome, Rett's Syndrome, and Pervavasive Development Illness (Dunlap & Fox, n.d.). There are also varying levels of the disorder from low-functioning (no communication and no social interaction) into high-functioning (a few communication and inappropriate but existent social skills.) Among the most difficult things teachers will face when coping with Autistic children is the lack of communication skills and improper or nonexistent social skills. In addition to academic schooling children with Autism need education in communication methods and social skills. Kamps et.al. Says "A key to accommodating pupils with disabilities in public school settings is that the supply of behavioral and social programming to come up with meaningful participation with nondisabled persons" (p.174).
