Theories abound around how folks develop emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. This essay will examine the concepts of five leaders on the field of development. Jean Piaget thought in four phases of development that were rather concrete in description (Atherton, 2010). 1. Sensorimotor stage (birth -- two years older) -- Children start to make sense of the world around them according to their interaction with their physical environment. Reality begins to be described. 2. Preoperational period (ages 2-7) -- Concrete bodily stimuli are necessary in order for a child to come up with new theories. 3. Concrete operations (ages 7-11) -- Like a child accumulates encounter with the physical world, he/she starts to emphasise to describe those encounters. Abstract notion is also emerging. 4. Formal operations (starting in ages 11-15) -- Conceptual reasoning is present and the child's cognitive abilities are similar to an adult's (Atherton, 2010). Piaget was firm in his concept of those stages. He had been convinced that a person had to advance from one stage to another, that this is a normal biological process affected by the surroundings and encounters. Biology restricts the point in time, however, also the environment determines the quality of growth. Lev Vygotsky stages of development weren't characterized by age or mathematics. Social and cultural experiences were the foundation for his theory. Consciousness was a result item of social interactions (Kearsley, 1994-2010).
