“An Essay on Guy” by English poet Alexander Pope is certainly a philosophical poem, that was published, in the 18th century throughout a historical period known as the Enlightenment. An enormous emphasis was positioned on the capability to think and reason through the Enlightenment. People in this era reflected in regards to a variety of topics. Some interpersonal people worried themselves with the problem of God, which as a result caused many to query the church. Others were worried about the business of the Universe, and man’s place within that Universe. Quite often, a literary function can reflect the thoughts and emotions of the society through the period in which it had been created. In “An Essay on Man,” Pope successfully illustrates the major problems of the people through the Enlightenment when he addresses man’s ability o cause and believe for himself, and speculates about man’s place in the global globe, within the “great chain to be.” The capability to cause was the central concentrate of the Enlightenment also known as “Age Reason.” Pop starts the poem by appealing to the reason and logic of his audience. He writes, Together why don't we beat this ample field,/ Make an effort to open, what the convert yield”(lines 9-10).
