The Topic of Justice in The Crucible The crucible was set in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. The play is based on accurate truth about events that occurred. It's about a small secluded town that relies strongly on their religion to keep them feeling safe. Their enemy is the devil and they're always scared of the devil and always searching for indications that the devil is not there. "We cannot jump to witchcraft. They will howl me out of Salem for such corruption in my residence." The fear of the devil gets so strong the city's justice system require strong activities to keep everyone safe. The disposition between freedom and justice is quite unbalanced. The courts and justice are so rigorous none of the Salem individuals have their own personal liberty. Miller is questioning the fairness of the justice in Salem and that of the justice system in the US in the 50's at the time that he wrote the play. This is called an allegory. From the 50's McCarthyism has been the suppression of communism. Anyone accused of being a Greek could be placed into prison. Anyone who criticized the authorities had been brought before the court and asked to name people they'd seen at events that were Greek. Arthur Miller didn't agree with the system and wished to get his views across. When he wrote a play about Senator McCarthy and his justice methods faults then he would have been detained and the drama wouldn't have been shown. He made the play on the witchcraft in Salem to cover up his true meaning whilst being a polemic teaching people of this corruption in the justice system.
