The gravel crackles beneath the tyres as my uncle backs his Ute into the driveway. I hide behind the door and peer out at him. He also beeps the horn. I really don't move. He also beeps again. Nevertheless I remain. The next time I hear the horn, I open the door and trudge out into the car and get in. 'You ready,' he says, like I had an option. 'Yeah.' His eyes flick over what I am wearing. 'Truly,' 'What? '' I say. 'Nothing, all right then. Put your seatbelt on.' Dust somersaults on the other side of the car as we drive down the dirt road towards the city. I watch it swirling in the car's side mirror. I know because he has told me about them. Never in fantastic detail. He can't. Secrecy is important in this line of work; without it, future missions could be jeopardised. Inspired by his silence and the dust's repetitive operation, I stare out the window just in time to find a hawk snatch a mouse out of the yellow grass along the roadside. The mouse doesn't know how blessed it's as the hawk carries it off. I do, so much that I wish I had been it. We pull into a service station on the city's outskirts. I remain in the car while he fills the tank. 'Have you had dinner? '' He inquires before moving inside to cover. I shake my head from side to side. He nods and returns with a can of Coke, a sausage roll, and a pack of condoms. 'Be sure that you use them,' he says. I take the pack and put them in my pocket. I then answer in the exact same manner as before, only this time my head nods up and down. Having eaten the sausage roll, I drink the last of this Coke as we pull into her driveway.
