Romanticism in Katherine Anne Porter's Old Mortality Katherine Anne Porter's characters in "Old Testament" make contradicting statements during the narrative with their personalities as much as their own words. Eva, the "Old Maid," signifies aging, along with the pain and hardships that could be associated with it. Amy may be thought of as her foil, since she seems to symbolize the antithesis of all Eva in every manner. Sometime with her premature death, Amy remains for the elderly members of the family the most powerful link to the values and ways of life they were so comfortable with during the Victorian Era. Eva, as she pushes votes for ladies, is symbolizing, as well as propelling, the motion to put on a woman's right to vote - something which even elderly girls in the household look down upon: ```In our part of the nation, in my own time, we were so provincial--a woman did not dare to believe or act for herself. The whole world was a little this way," she stated, however, we had been the worst, I really believe. Eva is not favored because she's an unpleasant reminder of reality, and reality is something that they seem to all be trying to overlook. "Eva was a blot, and no doubt about it, however, the little women felt she belonged to their own regular world of dull lessons to be heard, rigid shoes to be limbered up, scratchy flannels to be endured in chilly weather, measles and disappointed expectations.
