The Caribbean people have emerged from the experience of slavery with lots of baggage along the way. One such baggage was in the form of obstacles to schooling. The history of adult education comes way back in the early days of the 1700s where slaves undergone their first taste of adult education throughout the apprenticeship system. By this system, slaves were apprenticed to masters who instructed them artwork or a transaction which was likewise inclusive of writing and reading. (History of Adult Education, n.d.).) Following the abolition of slavery the slaves had been introduced to additional education in phases. Considering the challenges encountered in adult education today, you can identify with all the many social, economic and cultural factors of yester-year that is still ever so present, but on a different plateau at today’s society. When I reflect on adult education I can't help but recall the old expression ‘give a person a fish and he'll have food for a day, teach a person to fish and he'll have food to life.’ Adult education provides the human resource drivers together with the required knowledge that could allow adults to conserve himself, his household and by extension the market for life. Caribbean individuals have been enslaved for several years. Even from way back into our background, adults underwent many challenges to be educated. The plantation owners knew the worth of education so that they went about doing whatever is in their power to stop the blacks/slaves from accessing education that was an upward movement of freedom from captivity. Any slave found writing or reading would be beaten, maimed, or even risk death. Slaves had a voice throughout their music, storytelling and cultural observances.
