Essay about Juvenile Drug Courts

Drug Courts came as a result of a backlogged court system along with a steady, quickly increasing prison population. Drug courts are a form of diversion that helps the offender through rehabilitation and the community via an increased sense of security, which serves the best interest of everyone. Drug Courts are neighborhood based intermediate sanctions that incorporate treatment principles in the Criminal Justice System and divert drug offenders from conventional punishments of probation and prison. The target of drug courts programs would be to treat the underlying problems of addiction among drug criminals and eliminate participants' future drug use and crime. Drug courts came about as a result of the 1980's "war on drugs" where all levels of government came together to crack down on an outbreak of crack-cocaine usage that'd society believing that drugs would be the principal problem of the criminal justice program. Courts on state and national levels were burdened and overloaded with drug cases. As a result, prison populations began to rise at an amazing rate. According to statistics, "the number of adults arrested for drug-related offenses increased 27.3 percent between 1980 and 1995, at precisely the same period, the proportion of offenders in the custody of state correctional authorities for drug crimes increased from 6.4% to 22.7%". With this rate of growth in drug offenses going through the courts system, something needed to be done in order to handle the high number of cases that were drug-related. Initially, drug courts were only utilised to lighten the overcrowding from the courtroom. They didn't help to treat the offender or the offender's addictions. Back in 1989, Janet Reno and Timothy Murray started a drug court program in Dade County, Florida that became a prototype for the state. This program along with a number of other drug applications is composed of cooperation between the judiciary, the district attorney, the public defender, probation officers, the police department, along with the community. Over the last decade medication courts have caught on tremendously and now maintain adequate standing. These specialized courts were designed to make the processing of drug cases simpler. They also were designed to assist the offender by requiring treatment as part of the courtroom supervised program. As of today almost every state has a drug court program. In June 2001, there were a total of 697 drug court...

Will ethical habit pay back in long run?
Answer: I really do believe that honest behavior can pay off in the long run, however I really do not believe it will pay off as much as folks expect it to. People want moral action to be wide-spread and change the world, but the truth is that a lot of people won't be ethical. Plus, what is ethical to one person is unethical to another. This will depend all in the manner individuals interpret things. So although I think that consistently acting moral and transferring those values down..
