Sex Equity in Math and Science From the research I have read while there's a disagreement on when and how much of a gender gap exists in math and science, there's absolutely an equity problem that needs healing. There seems to be a wealth of information regarding equity problems and as a future teacher I feel that it is very important to analyze those problems. If gender equity issues exist in today's' classrooms why do they and what can be done to help fix. Everything I have read so much claims that a gender gap exists in science, although opinions about mathematics vary. I found a paper on the Internet from the National Center for Education Statistics called "Trends In Educational Equity of Girls & Women." Utilizing data from NAEP this source says that between 1973 and 1994 academic achievement of females in mathematics was about equal to males (NCES, 2000). The NCES report says that females and males take likewise challenging academic classes (2000). Baker (2001) however writes that study demonstrates that there is a little female superiority in elementary school and middle school along with a moderate male excellence at high school in science and mathematics. Baker (2001) researched gender equity in gifted elementary students in grades 4 and 6. Following his study he reasoned that "gender had a significant influence on the performance of high performing students in grades 6 and 4" (Baker, p.134).
