When America was founded in 1776, political factions were much less distinctively partisan than they are today. They more closely represented liberal and conservative sides of the ideology. Guys ran for political office, holding their faith as their flag, not the party that they belonged to. Sadly, this method did not last long. By the late 1820s, a powerful party system had evolved. However, there was still 1 group opposed to the party platform, the Whig Party. Its history formed the ideals it appreciated. Unfortunately, the Whig Party's short lifespan affected the national political conversation forever. Even the Whig Party's intriguing history and tragic demise are significant to understanding the political system of the USA. The history of this political party system is crucial to understanding the Whig party. Martin Van Buren was the machines behind the governmental system. His new structure relied heavily on the "winner takes all" perfect; with the victor gaining the right to replace members of their present government, (Allen, pg. 199). This enabled the president to surround himself with fans, both in the cabinet and bureaucracy, who agreed with his notions of government. Van Buren thought that he could avoid a civil war over slavery by buying voters' assistance with government appointments and jobs, ''Allen, pg. 199). While this ideal of government patronage grew, so did the centralized government. The party made under his watchful eye became called the Democratic Party. At the end of Jackson's presidency, his vice-president, Van Buren, was named the successor for the party.
