Social isolation is one of the very severe punishments known to man. But for just one innocent girl, known as Genie, social isolation was all she understood. Genie was a nickname given to a feral 13-year-old girl who had been a victim of being seriously abused and ignored by her parents, in her own house in Arcadia, California. Ahead of Genie being uncovered in 1970 from Los Angeles child welfare authorities, a lot of her entire life consisted of being locked alone in her room strapped to a potty chair or a crib resulting in her being immobile (Reynolds as a consequence of this intense isolation Genie overlooked the critical period to obtain speech (Curtiss et al., 1974; Reynolds & Fletcher-Janzen, 2004).
