The USA stopped importing slaves from Africa from 1808. After that, the majority of African American slaves were born into slavery (Sawyer 15). Many never considered the idea of liberty. Harriet Tubman was an ordinary servant girl using a vision for freedom. Harriet said, "I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew that they had been slaves." ("Harriet Tubman", The most individuals who Harriet freed were people that really wanted to be free and understood exactly what freedom was. Harriet Tubman's desire for freedom resulted in dangerous, inventive means of escape from captivity ("Harriet Tubman", The Biography Channel site). African American slave, Harriet Tubman, helped shape the course of history through her participation in the Underground Railroad System, Civil War, along with the Abolitionist Movement. Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland round the year 1820 (Petry 5). Nobody knows the specific date as the parents were illiterate and there wasn't any birth certificate (Petry 4). Her master had been Master Edward Brodas who dwelt in the big house on the farm. Harriet had several sisters (Petry 5). She was the fifth child born to slave parents, Harriet Green and Ben Ross. Her "basket name" or puppy name was Araminta (Alexander 2). When Harriet was very young, she lived to the Brodas Plantation along with her mother and dad. The cabins that they lived in were called "quarters" and they had no walls or windows. There was just 1 space and it had been shared with the entire family. They had to sleep on the ground because there was no furniture. The "quarter" wasn't visible to the proprietor's large property.
