It's projected that just two African-Americans were killed through lynching each week between 1880 and 1920. Others that demonstrated enough guts to stand up to protect those victims of racism were also risked with lynching. Courage, especially the "guts to fight for what you believe is correct" was a vital factor in the civil rights movement. It's also within the publication "To kill a mockingbird" predominantly from the protagonists and those whom they work to protect. The antagonists, society at the fictional town of Maycomb itself, show little courage or pity during the story. Atticus finch, the father of the narrator Jean-Louise, conveys courage the most. Shown through his actions of defending whom the antagonists despise, thus going against society . The children also present their own acts of courage, as they do the same as their dad, whom concurrently taught them his version of courage. A courage without guns, or violence, but rather a courage of words, and the need to protect someone. As it might appear, the writer of the story To Kill a Mockingbird would express courage just through the Protagonists and those that they try to protect. Atticus Finch, was an important figure in the publication. Not only as a personality, but also as a major influence for some other characters. He himself though, could be one of the, if not the individual that demonstrates the most amount of courage in the story. He exemplifies courage in many conditions, the most major ones being tom Robinson's trial, the killing of Tim Johnson, along with his desire to instruct that courage to his children, all symbolizing him being the catalyst to eradicating racism in that town.
