From Pera to Beyoglu Beyoglu, for days gone by century especially, is a very essential settlement and is probably the most valuable elements of the big and historic Istanbul (Arkan, 1993, p. 15). Istanbul is a meeting point for most different cultures and religions through the entire history; "... linked religious and ethnic groupings; Turks, Russian, Ermenian, Rum, Nasturi, Arabian, Gypsy, French, Catholic, Levanten, Sirbian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Tatarian, Jewish, Italian, Maltiz and much more in this community which girls took little walks..." (Dorsay, 1993, p.107). These cultures lived collectively in peace in Beyoglu unlike all of those other world. Beyoglu first emerged in the 8th century with the name "Galata" while Istanbul was the administrative centre of the Roman Empire (Coruk, 1995, p. 21). Second emerging name was "Pera" meaning "over" in Greek vocabulary (Arkan, 1993, p.13). Today Beyoglu may be the combined name of the two areas since in 1925 following the Independence War (Arkan, 1993, p. 13). As time passes, with influences of different cultures; cultural, political, cultural changes happened in Beyoglu. Beyoglu is usually first known using its most significant settlement Galata in 13th Century (http://www.beyoglu.net/bilgi.htm). Galata was ruled by Italian colonies which were trying to get the trade over Mediterranean region (Arkan, 1993, p. 149). Since trade was essential, Galata had end up being the political and cost-effective power of that time period since it was between Kasimpasa and Tophane where the majority of the trade occurred (Arkan, 1993, p. 149). Also "Halic", that was referred to as "Golden Horn" was the harbor of the town and it had been settled in the southern component of Beyoglu, was very important to trade, so with Halic and Galata areas, trade got bigger...
