Jonathan Kozol's Amazing Grace is a book about the trials and tribulations of everyday life for a group of children who reside in the poorest congressional district of america, the South Bronx. Their lives may seem extraordinary to people, but to these, they are just as normal as everyone else. What's normal? For the children of the South Bronx, residing with the pollution, the illness, the medications, and the violence is the sole means of life most people have ever understood. Inside this publication, the children speak openly and frankly about feeling 'abandoned', 'hidden' or 'forgotten' from our state, one that is blind to their difficulties. Researching the people themselves will only get us so far in understanding what their area is really like and why they feel this manner. Jonathan Kozol really must know the people separately. We could take his knowledge and stories to try for a better understanding of the environment in which they live. Using this method, we could explore the many reasons why the individuals have problems, what some levels of intervention could be, and perhaps find some options to creating the South Bronx a much healthier and safer place for these children and others to reside. Problem Identification The environment where we examine these individuals can only be defined by first having a look at possible explanations for why the people have issues. Some of the problems discussed in Amazing Grace have festered across the USA for some time now. The large quantities of drug users from the community, the high levels of gang-related violence, and the various instances of people who have contracted the AIDS virus are simply some of the problems that have arisen within this ghetto. There are several differences between this community and others in america, one of which is that the government has piled those folks all together and created a ghetto of the lowest income families. It has ostracized them in the remainder of the nation. It's given them several abandonment issues to deal with, while also telling them that they aren't worthy of living among the wealthier people. Environmental factors are involved in the problems arising in the South Bronx. Pollution, as an example, might be the biggest source of the large number of children in the community that have asthma. Asthma is a condition in which one has trouble breathing. Without clean.
