Bret Harte, an American writer and poet, was born on August 25, 1836 in Albany, New York. His father, Henry Harte, and mom, Elizabeth Ostrander, both worked as teachers. His full name was Francis Brett Hart, however he decided to utilize Bret, denouncing the final T. His father then legally changed their last name to Harte instead of Hart.
