Portrayal of Different Ethnic Groups in the Media Throughout the course of studying education, and ethnicity problems I became curious about how ethnic groups were portrayed in the press. Although I have not studied this before, I wanted to do something different, but still employ the fundamental concepts that I have researched. I have noticed how there seems to be a trend with all areas involving ethnicity, and personally feel there is racism and under-representation of ethnic groups on tv, and definitely inequalities in the media. The press has a huge impact on the perception of life and also self-concepts, and reinforce stereotypical ideals, also it appears that ethnic minorities tend to be characterised as uneducated, illiterate and poor role-models. Therefore the aim of this research is to observe how people feel about how the media represents all ethnic groups, and whether they think that they are stereotypical. (139) CONTEXT & CONCEPTS My very first concept is that the cultural effects version which sees the media as a very strong influence, but also sees it as very diverse, and one kind of viewer's reaction may vary to another. But, there's an expected response, known as the preferred reading. Those who lack experience in cultural diversity are more inclined to accept what's revealed and therefore make generalisations from what they view to what they believe. Therefore we create generalisations or stereotypical views of different members of society. This is my second idea. A stereotype is a conventional image of a individual or group.
