Genetic Testing in the Workplace Testing of one form or another has always been quite common in the project application process, whether it's the testing of one's skill sets through an application or drug testing. Now, through scientific advances of the Human Genome Project, a new sort of testing has become available to companies: genetic testing. This new sort of testing could detect any hereditary problems in a prospective worker's DNA, such as genetic predisposition for disease and possible health issues later on. Genetic testing could be beneficial to companies monetarily, as it would be a way to monitor their workers for long term, damaging aspects that could be expensive for the company. The legal right to do so, however, is a controversial issue in the company world. Many people regard it as an invasion of privacy, an open invitation for bias in pools, and a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (French). Genetic testing could be utilised in both the hiring procedure, and as an effort for organizations to cater to their own employees' needs. It might also, however, be utilized as a tool of discrimination against people who have minor or significant genetic abnormalities. Many ethical issues are raised: Why does one have a right to anonymity in their DNA? Should companies discriminate against people who have genetic problems, a factor out of this subject's control? These disagreements and more are what make genetic testing in the office a contentious topic now.
