Achieving Humor in Educating Rita by Willy Russell Written by Willy Russell at 1985, "Educating Rita" is a funny interpretation of his own life as a young Liverpudlian hairdresser and his own aspirations to become knowledgeable. The drama relies on Rita, the hairdresser who wants a better lifestyle, also begins this adventure by registering in an Open University course. It is here she meets her tutor, Frank. You might say, the secret to her dreams. If I were to lead this play, I would want to achieve humor for a viewer by exploring the different aspects of comedy; humor of character, comedy of situation, comedy of misunderstanding and comedy of speech. There are many examples of humor of character in this drama, particularly as Russell has generated such powerful and characters that are senile. Rita, the fast tongued, outspoken, and witty personality is a foundation for humour as she isn't afraid to speak her thoughts. An excellent illustration of her humorous personality is Rita's very first meeting with Frank, her soon-to-be tutor. As she reaches his office, she notices a risqui picture in the wall and is unable to resist commenting on the way "It is quite sensual." And defending her view by stating "there is no guess about it," and using the imperative, "Look at these tits." The audience should get this funny because it's as they would be amazed at her sudden outburst to an 'authority figure' in the play. Frank is rather jaded by Rita's confidence and to demonstrate this, his response ought to be delayed and perplexed to show his inability to maintain Rita's rapid tongue. It's imperative that this scene provides the viewers the impression that this drama is funny, since it's the very first time the audience meets the characters. Frank's mindset towards Rita is another fantastic example of humor of personality. As a coach in a college, the viewer would expect Frank to be quite formal, however, he isn't in this circumstance. Frank reveals his comic personality to the crowd as he discusses a window at his office to Rita. He informs her that he "sometimes get an impulse to throw something through it usually a stu...
