Comparing Dylan Thomas's poem Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night and John Milton's poem once I believe How My Light is Spent Dylan Thomas's poem "Don't go gentle into that fantastic night" and John Milton's poem "When I consider how my light is spent" were written during times of trouble in their various warrior's life. Thomas was confronted with losing his dad to death; Milton was coping with becoming totally blind at the age of forty-three. As each poet struggles to take care of the crisis happening in his life, he also makes a statement about the relationship between humanity and God, the reasons that God gives and then takes away specific presents, and the correct way to live life. Thomas and Milton ended up with contrasting answers to these basic questions about life. The poets' use of personal events in their lives as a subject and their use of their personal pronouns "I" and "my" solve possible queries of voice in both genders. Because Thomas refers directly to "my father" (line 6) and Milton opens his poem with the line "When I consider how my light is spent" (1), then the reader could, with a few simple understanding of the history of each poem, reasonably presume that the poet and the speaker ' are synonymous. Both Thomas and Milton chose to discuss their private thoughts on intensely personal things with the world through their own poems. By drawing from their own experiences, the poets offer these functions a tone which contrasts with the reader since he can relate the words of this poem with his/her own life.
