The Negroes started wielding knives as well as the authorities their firearms? Thousands of police reservations, a lot of them Negroes, were hurried to the district?All traffic was re hauled around Harlem?It came down mostly to a struggle between law enforcement and Negro looters. ? Much of Baldwin?s writing came from the World War II time period full of racial tension. The Harlem Riots of 1943 were yet another piece in the Civil Rights movement of which Baldwin utilized experiences and events from inside their own writings. On August 1, 1943, Harlem ? Boiled over,? As stated by NAACP leader Walter White (NY Times, 17). The start of the event has been attributed to a person, ? Personal Robert Bandy, the 26-year-old Negro soldier?who is charged with attacking a white policeman who was arresting a Negro woman in a Harlem hotel? (New York Times, 17). Rumors soon spread that police officers had murdered a black soldier who was trying to guard his mom. This caused some momentous outburst of rioting ruining a lot of Harlem. The statistics of this riot vary depending upon the origin, but roughly 500 persons were injured, five dead, and 400-500 arrested, and property damage estimated at 500,000 to a million dollars. .
