A Complete Turnaround Sharon Old's poem, "The Victims," deals with the underlying theme of abuse. Old's exemplifies this theme through the tone of this poem, which can be achieved by imagistic language, rhyme and rhythm. In this poem the speaker has been illustrated through two points of view, initially as a child then as an adult reflecting back on a troublesome youth experience. As the speaker's point of view changes so will using poetic devices. The picture opens with the speaker recalling the behaviours of an abusive father when she was a kid. The tone at this stage was one of disgust, hatred, however, and taking joy in her father's failures. This was because of the fact that she had been educated to feel this way by her mom. As a kid she wasn't conscious of this. It wasn't till adulthood that she recognized her sense of bitterness towards her dad were evoked by her mum. The speaker, herself, was not the victim of her father's abusive behavior nonetheless she still hated him because that's the only way she knew just how to feel. These feelings are shown through the imagistic language used to show the functions of revenge on the father. After the mother finally divorced the father, "her kids loved it" (3-4). After the father was fired from his occupation, "we stumbled inside" (5-6). The pleasure that the entire family took seeing their father's demise was rather vivid. "We were tickled to consider your workplace removed, you are secretaries removed" (7-9). The finality of the father's loses was shown from the taking from his pencils and reams of paper in his job (11). The graphics used in the initial 16 lines are very gloomy and dark and are related to death. This is as if to represent the family's method of "murdering him through his sacrifice. The suits that belonged to the daddy were portrayed as "dark carcasses that hung in your closet" (13) and also Olds specifically pointed out that even the noses of his shoes had been black (14).
