The use of the pc has had a remarkable impact on everything we as people and companies do since its beginning. Computers have gone from being the size of an entire room to something that may be held in your hand. They have also become a main source of storage. The demand for storage has increased by leaps and bounds as more types and amounts of data are moved and saved. Words, images, streaming video are all kinds of storage which are being housed on networks now. Among the first forms of data storage has been that the punch card. Punch cards were perforated paper which stored patterns that were used on fabric to make layouts. They were subsequently able to save information, but could not hold much. Their principal use was to store computer settings for different machines making for easier programming. Then came shattered tape, magnetic tape and compact cassettes, all which were used to store information on PCs. Subsequently the floppy disc arrived on the storage landscape. Initially they were designed to replace the tape drives on systems. Tape drives are still used today for the backup of information. Floppy disk started out nearly the size of a bit of paper, eight inches (Watson, 2010). They were quite big. Over time, the floppy disc reduced in time. They proceeded from eight inches to 5.25 inches then eventually down to 3.5 inches. The quantity of information stored on a floppy disc was small in comparison to today’s criteria. At that moment, most data being stored was simply pictures and words. Floppy discs were sufficient space. Users had to physically take the disks from user to user within a corporation. Luckily, they had been within close proximity since networks were still fairly young. Storage Technology has changed the way businesses performed their da...
