For the Puritans in the first New England colonies lifestyle was in no way easy, but there was the likelihood to expand their beliefs free from the persecution from Church of England. They had the chance to create their ideal society under God with the bible as their law that they would define how exactly to live. The Puritans attempt to create their model culture that could spread and cull the impurities from the church. But how did these beliefs and goals eventually effect their society? In the book Give Me Liberty: An American History by Eric Foner he notes that: “Puritanism, however, had not been simply a group of ideas but circumstances of mind, a zealousness in pursuing the real faith that alienated many who held differing religious views” (Foner 63). The Puritans saw religion not as simply a belief but as life, that they had an obligation to God to be the perfect Christians. This idea that their religion was their life result in the basic idea of a covenant with God. Including that is Digital History The Puritan Notion of the Covenant: “All social relationships...were envisioned with regards to a contract or covenant which rested on consent and mutual responsibilities.” This notion of a covenant emphasized the Puritans' belief that these were responsible of their religion and also to surpass their end of the contract that they had to check out God's law or the bible to a “T”. The Puritans' beliefs had been extremely strong, but this overzealous attitude towards their spiritual beliefs contributed to issues down the road.
