The film focuses on the seventeen years Karen Blixen invested in Africa between 1913 and 1930. As in real life, the movie starts with Blixen arriving in Kenya to the intentions of marrying her cousin Baron Bror Blixen. A friend before they met in Kenya to wed, this union was a marriage of convenience.
