Closing the Golden Door America has, is, and can always be a country of immigrants: the fantastic melting pot. In the years which have approved since Emma Lazarus’ poem was inscribed on the Statue of Liberty “the golden door” has noticed times when it had been open wide and occasions when it had been closed shut to virtually all immigrants.
