Mother as Villain and Victim in Joy Luck Club At The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan targets many mother-daughter relationships. Among those connections explored is that between an immigrant Chinese mom and her American born daughter Jing-mei. The mother expects Jing-mei for a prodigy child - while chasing this dream she accidentally makes a severe battle between her and her kid. To meet her unrealistic expectations, the mom pushes Jing-mei are the best in everything and anything. Initially, the reader may perceive that the mother as the villain in the storynonetheless, the mum only wants her daughter to have the lifestyle that she never needed. Jing-mei doesn't know her goals. Jing-mei's mum believed opportunity was anywhere in the united states, "America was where all of my mother's hopes lay" (Tan 1208). The mom lost everything when she moved from China to San Francisco in 1949. In China she lost her loved ones, her partner, and she had to abandon her twin infant girls (Tan 1208). This implies that her mum had a difficult life and wanted to begin a new life in the us. Unfamiliar with the customs of America, she was brought up in a rigorous Chinese civilization. Her mother probably raised her the exact same way, and for that reason, that is where she learned her parenting skills.
