Civil Disobedience Works Cited Not Contained I feel that civil disobedience is justified as a method of trying to alter the law. I believe that civil disobedience is an expression of someone's viewpoints. If someone is willing to break a law for what they believe in, more power to them! Civil disobedience is described as, "the refusal to comply with the demands or orders of a government or occupying power, without even resorting to violence or aggressive measures of opposition" (Webster's Dictionary). This refusal usually takes the kind of passive resistance. Its usual purpose is to force concessions from the government or occupying power. Civil disobedience was a major approach and philosophy of nationalist movements in Africa and India, in the civil rights movement of U.S. blacks, and also of labour and anti-war moves in many nations. People practicing civil disobedience violate a law because they consider it unjust and aspire to call attention to it. In his article, "Civil Disobedience," American writer Henry David Thoreau set forth the basic tenets of civil disobedience for the very first time. The independence of India in the 1930's was mostly due to the nonviolent opposition by Mohandas Gandhi into the British colonial legislation. In the United States, the nonmilitant attempts of Martin Luther King, Jr., helped lead to civil rights laws. There are many examples that exemplify civil disobedience is justified. In late 1955 Rosa Parks, a top member of this local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was jailed for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger.
