The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns from Khaled Hosseini is set in Afghanistan. It covers a 50 year interval from the 1950's into the mid 2000's. Hosseini uses allusions to actual Afghani events to depict the ever changing liberties that the girls of Afghanistan endure with the lack of equilibrium in Afghanistan's authorities. In the 1950's until around 1985 that the Soviet Union had Afghanistan under its management. This Soviet participation in Afghanistan led to the ideologies of communism to spread into the Afghanistan culture. Among the communistic ideas which were assimilated into has been that the thought which every person is equal. This idea made life a lot easier for the girls of Afghanistan. One of the freedoms they had been given under Soviet control was that the allowance of girl becoming educated, "The government had sponsored literacy courses for all girls. Almost two-thirds of the students at Kabul University were women currently girls who have been studying law, medicine, technology" (135). Hosseini expresses this through the personality Laila. Laila's father, Babi, was a professor and also strongly urged the requirement for Laila to find an education. He was so committed that he would help out Laila with her homework every night. Hosseini expressed this when Laila asserted "Babi thought that the 1 thing that communists had done- or at least intended to- ironically, was in the filed of education More specifically the education of girls." (135). On Babi there was nothing much more impertinent than the education of woman in Afghanistan. He understood that when half the population is illiterate that the nation cannot properly expect to better and new things. Together with the brand new right to understand, women's requirement to cover their skin was comfortable all throughout Afghanistan. .
