Mother-Daughter Communication at Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club Among the many stories between the numerous characters of "The Joy Luck Club", I think the central theme connecting them all is the inability of the moms and their brothers to communicate effectively. The moms all have tales of previous struggles and hard times nevertheless do not believe that their daughters really enjoy this actuality. The mothers of this narrative all want their daughters to never have to go through the struggles they themselves had to go through, yet they are frustrated when their daughters grow up and do not exhibit the respect or potency of their mothers. Here is the ironic paradox of this narrative. The Chinese mothers came into the United States to escape the difficult life they led in China and to start new in the USA. They didn't want their children to develop as they'd. The short story in the beginning of the novel describes this feeling. "Then the girl and the swan sailed across a sea many thousands of li broad, stretching their necks toward America. On her trip she cooed into the swan: "In America that I will have a daughter just like me. But over there nobody will state her value is measured by the loudness of her husband's belch. Over there nobody will look down on her, since I will make her speak only perfect American English. And above there she will always be too high to consume any regret! She'll understand my meaning, since I will offer her this swan - a monster that became more than what was hoped for." In spite of the fact that this is but a short story before the lengthy one begins and isn't really credited to any particular character in the narrative, I feel it correctly describes all of the mothers' feelings a.. .
