Beckett explores the subject of futility in an endeavor to leave the audience with questions about the meaning of life. The methods and ways in which he does so change in relation to the scene but he relies heavily upon the use of philosophical and emotive language and a shocking method to intellectually and mentally engage the audience. All characters which Beckett features within his play act as literary constructs in producing the setting and tone in which to develop and analyze the subject of futility. The subject of futility is related to the philosophy of Nihilism and grounded in the belief that our world is stochastic, and therefore structure-less. If life doesn't have any structure or coherent meaning it could ultimately be seen as futile. Beckett explores the subject of futility throughout the text in many ways. The theme of futility is instantly attracted into the forefront in the start of the spectacle through stage instructions regarding Estragon’s battle with his boot. Diction like ‘he offers up, tries again as before’ instantly define the tone of the futility of both his actions and the situation. This is further reflected in the atmosphere of the drama and the clear bareness of the surroundings. The theme of futility is further reflected in the cyclical character of the dialogue in the sense that nothing seems to change and everything is simply replicated, their dialogue never reached a definitive conclusion they are finally still ‘˜waiting for Godot’ and yearning to find answers.
