I was a little apprehensive about this project because it asked me to do something I haven't performed before, identify a pupil's difficulties in reading, asses their ability and create interventions for the student. Reading is such a tremendous skill and also there are so many factors that promote the achievement of an independent reader. While working with my pupil I understood how essential understanding difficulty in reading is to get some readers. I discovered how to asses areas like comprehension, listening comprehension, fluency, oral reading, phonemics, vocabulary, spelling and phonics. The procedure for reading is similar to a jig-saw puzzle. You have to match all of the bits (areas listed above) jointly in order to find the entire picture. My practicum student, that I'll refer to as M, which makes it fairly clear to me that it is easy for students to progress from grade to grade using just some of the pieces fitting together rather than knowing which pieces are missing. I met with M, a female going into the 8th grade on a Tuesday afternoon. I managed to function with M because I worked with her mother last year and understood her parents would permit me to work with their daughter. Her mom works as a counselor but has educated adapted physical education prior to earning her master's in counseling. Her dad works as a research analyst for a mining company and frequently works from home. M little brother is going to the 5th grade this year and tends to frighten his elderly sister since younger brothers sometimes do. Both parents value education and believe in instilling a challenging work ethic in their own children. M parents also value family very much and they all appear to support one another and get along.
