If one thinks of a strong, powerful individual, they most likely will first think of a world president or leader. All these are examples of influential leaders, but in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, the strongest characters on Pip are those who'd appear to be little female characters in the novel. One would presume as the period of Great Expectations was put the first half of the 19th Century, which had been the period of the Victorian Era, the men of the publication could have a better impact on the women of the publication. However, Pip is impacted greatly by women during his lifetime, much more so than guys. Pip's greatest female influence in life was Estella, but the objective of this paper is to discuss the influence of more minor characters on Pip, for example: Mrs. Joe, Miss Havisham, and Biddy. Their impacts on him change as he grows and matures. The very first real female influence Pip was his sister, Mrs. Joe Gargery. Pip's parents had expired before and that he had never known them. Mrs. Joe then awakened and increased Pip. She's not exactly what one would predict a positive influence. Mrs. Joe was considered a mother figure to Pip and she was always proud to proclaim to acquaintances and friends that she “brought him up by hand.” Pip didn't understand what that expression meant. He explained: “Having at that time to seek out for myself what the expression meant, and knowing her to have a hard and heavy hand, and to be in the habit of placing it upon her husband as well as upon me, I supposed that Joe Gargery and I were both brought up by hand” (Dickens 6).
